More on Darcy Tucker

Darcy Tucker, a native of Endiang, Alberta, played 947 regular season and 68 playoff games in the National Hockey League for the Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Colorado Avalanche. Tucker scored 215 goals and had 261 assists for 476 points in the NHL, along with 1,410 penalty minutes. Tucker was the epitome of an agitator in the NHL, a player players hated to play against but wished to have play on their team. Not a big man at 5’10” 180 pounds, Tucker played a big man game throughout his Major Junior Career and his professional career in the National Hockey League, delivering colossal hits, fighting anyone he had to despite his size or their size, and in the process antagonizing opposing teams while inspiring his own.

Tucker played on the legendary Kamloops Blazers teams of the 1990s and was captain of the team in the 1994-95 season. Darcy Tucker is one of four players in the 90 year history of Major Junior Ice Hockey to have won three Memorial Cups, the championship of Major Junior Ice Hockey in Canada. Those Memorial Cups were won in 1992 (in Seattle, Washington), 1994 (in Laval, P.Q.) and 1995 (in Kamloops, B.C.). Tucker was listed by the Kamloops Blazers in 1992 after Kamloops General Manager Bob Brown watched a videotape of him, never having seen Tucker play in a live game prior to that time. In 1995 Tucker also won a World Junior Championship Gold Medal while representing Canada, in the World Junior Championships in Calgary.

Darcy Tucker was drafted in the 6th Round of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, 151st Overall. Always

told he was too small and not fast enough, Tucker overcame these perceived obstacles and became a consummate professional ice hockey player who could play it any way you wanted – physical, skilled, defensive, offensive. In his first professional season in the American Hockey League he won the Dudley “Red” Garrett Memorial Trophy and scored 93 points in 74 games. The following season he stuck with the Montreal Canadiens where he played for two seasons and then was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1998. In 2000 he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for whom he played for nine seasons. In 2008 Tucker was signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League. Tucker had six twenty goal seasons in the National Hockey League including a career-high 28 goals in the 2005-2006 season playing in 74 games.

Tucker was an icon in the greater Toronto area during his nine seasons with the Maple Leafs, as he became a fan favorite for his energetic and physical play, and his ability to agitate at the highest level while still being a consistent and effective offensive contributor. Tucker has been active in local charities in Toronto, and has been an inspirational speaker for many major corporations in Canada, including IBM Canada. Tucker has had guest television appearances on two Canadian comedy programs, the Sean Cullen Show and Little Mosque on the Prairie.

Announcing his retirement from the National Hockey League on October 1, 2010, Darcy Tucker also revealed that he had joined forces with his agent of eighteen years (his entire career), Carlos Sosa and together they have formed a new sports representation business, Turning Point Sports Management LLC. This business shall be based out of Auburn, Washington, Denver, Colorado and Toronto, Ontario.  In January of 2011, Darcy Tucker was certified and approved by the National Hockey League Players Association to act as a Certified NHLPA Agent.  Tucker currently resides in the greater Toronto area where he resides with his wife Shannon and three children Owynn, Cole and Cain.

More on Curtis Joseph

One of the true “money” goalies of the 1990s, Curtis Joseph developed into an NHL star while guarding the net of the St. Louis Blues, Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs. Although he was usually excellent in the regular season, “Cujo” became of the most feared playoffs foes due to his penchant for elevating his game in the NHL’s second season. His cat-like reflexes and indomitable competitive spirit made Joseph one of the toughest goalies for shooters to face in recent years.

A native of Keswick, Ontario, less than an hour north of Toronto, the shy Joseph initially struggled to make an impression as a hockey goalie at the amateur level. He almost gave up altogether before venturing to Wilcox, Saskatchewan to play for the Notre Dame Hounds. At this point Joseph was trying to earn a college scholarship through hockey as a means of gaining access to an education. He impressed a few scouts and eventually was offered a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin, which was trying to replace the departed Mike Richter.

Joseph excelled for the Badgers during his one season of college hockey in 1988-89. He won 21 games and was voted on to the WCHA Conference First All-Star team. A few weeks after the season “Cujo” was signed by the St. Louis Blues and left college for a pro career. He began the 1989-90 season with the Peoria Rivermen of the IHL but was eventually called up to the Blues to solidify their goaltending picture after Greg Millen was traded to the Quebec Nordiques. Joseph played in 15 regular season and six playoff games while solidifying the goaltending picture with Vincent Riendeau.

Photo: Everything Hockey. Bio: Hockey Hall Of Fame

Joseph became the Blues’ first string goalie in 1991-92 when he won 27 games in 60 appearances. The following season he won 29 games but earned league-wide attention with his brilliant effort in the playoffs. Even though the club lost to Toronto in the Norris division final, Joseph emerged as a hero after stopping 119 of 122 shots in consecutive double overtime games.

Prior to the 1995-96 season the cost-cutting Blues shipped the popular Joseph to Edmonton. He played well but the Oilers were in the early stages of a rebuilding process. In April 1996 he excelled for Canada at the World Championships and later that year represented his country in the inaugural World Cup of hockey.

In 1996-97 and 1997-98, Joseph helped the young Oilers reach the playoffs where his brilliance guided the team into the second round both years. Joseph shocked the hockey world in July 1998 when he left the Oilers to sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Although he never dominated the NHL’s goaltending statistics, “Cujo” was looked upon as one of the league’s top netminders whose play only improved during the post-season.

His impact on his new club was immediate as his excellent goaltending helped the Leafs register 99 points and reach the Stanley Cup semifinals. His coolness under fire impressed back up netminder Glenn Healy. Joseph won 35 games in the regular season and nine in the playoffs and was runner-up to Dominik Hasek in the voting for the Vezina trophy.

As Toronto closed out the twentieth century, Joseph’s netminding was a key reason behind the club’s challenge for the most points in the Eastern conference. The Leafs finished at the top of the Northeast division to win their first regular season title since 1962-63 and were a legitimate contender for the Stanley Cup. Joseph’s popularity reached epic proportions in hockey-mad “Hogtown.”

Joseph went on to play two more seasons with the Maple Leafs and was a member of Canada’s Gold Medal Olympic Team in Salt Lake City before leaving the team in the the summer of 2002 to sign as a free agent with the 2002 Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings. Looking to fill the void left by Dominik Hasek who retired following the Wings Stanley Cup win, the team felt that Joseph would be the ideal replacement and early on has shown that the team made the right choice. However, following a one year hiatus, Hasek returned to the Motor City in 2003-04, which created a log jam in the Red Wing goal with Joseph, Hasek and Many Legace.

Injuries would limit Joseph to a mere 31 games in 2003-04 and following a cancelled 2004-05 NHL season, he was acquired by the Phoenix Coyotes. With the Coyotes Joseph would split both his seasons and record his 424th career win, thereby moving into sixth place on the NHL’s all-time list, passing Tony Esposito. After a pair of seasons in Phoenix, Joseph would not be resigned by the club and remain an unrestricted free agent up until the Calgary Flames signed the veteran goaltender on January 14, 2008.

In Calgary, Joseph notched his 448th career NHL win which moved him past Terry Sawchuck for fourth place in all-time wins. In the post-season, Joseph replaced Kiprusoff to backstop the Flames to an exciting come from behind win after the club initially fell behind 3-0. However, the Flames were eliminated that round and Joseph would sign in the off-season with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

More on Joe Carter:

This Canadian Sports icon was drafted 2nd overall by the Chicago Cubs in 1981 after being named the Sporting NewsCollege Baseball player of the year. Over a 16 year MLB career he amassed over 2000 hits and almost 400 home runs playing for six teams including the Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles and San Francisco Giants. He was a 5-Time All-Star, 2-Time Silver Slugger and 2-Time World Series Champion and will forever  be remembered for his famous game winning walk-off home run in Game 6 to win the World Series for the Toronto Blue Jays in 1993. He is a member of the Toronto Blue Jays Level of Excellence and was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003

More on Robbie Alomar:

Roberto is the only baseball player inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a Toronto Blue Jay™. His career 17-year career, included 12-time All-Star appearances and 10 Gold Glove Awards.

For most of his career, the only time the word “second” appeared in the same sentence as Roberto Alomar was when someone was describing his position in the field. At the plate, with the leather or in the final standings, Alomar was usually on top.

Born Feb. 5, 1968 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Alomar had baseball in his blood. His father, Sandy Alomar Sr., was an All-Star second baseman in his 15-year major league career. Like his father, Roberto played second, threw right-handed and switch-hit. Alomar’s brother, Sandy, Jr., also made it to the big leagues as a catcher.

At 18, Roberto Alomar signed with the San Diego Padres and won the California League batting title in his second year in the minors with a .346 batting average. By 1988, he was with the parent club, making a splash with his defense and speed and finishing fifth in National League Rookie of the Year voting. He earned his first All-Star selection in 1990.

Photo via Sportsnet

Following that season, Alomar was traded to Toronto – where his offense took off. Alomar raised his average over .300, helping the Blue Jays to back-to-back World Series titles in 1992-1993 while finishing in third in the AL batting title race in 1993. He hit a combined .354 in four postseason series in those two championship seasons.

“Everybody can see the skills on the field,” said teammate Dave Winfield, himself a Hall of Famer. “He’s acrobatic, flamboyant, he’s got his style.”

Following the 1995 season, Alomar signed with the Baltimore Orioles. Forming a Hall of Fame double-play combination with Cal Ripken Jr., helped his team get back to the playoffs – advancing to the ALCS in 1996 and 1997. Following the 1998 season, Alomar signed with the Cleveland Indians and played with his brother Sandy for the first time.

“He reminds me of some of the great players that I’ve played with, who seem like they write their own script,” said Davey Johnson, who managed Alomar with the Orioles. “Frank Robinson’s one, Henry Aaron was the other.”

Alomar was traded to the Mets in 2002 before later stops with the White Sox and Diamondbacks. He retired after the 2004 season. In 17 major league seasons, Alomar tallied 2,724 hits, 210 home runs, 1,134 RBI, a .300 batting average and .984 fielding percentage. He made 12 consecutive All-Star appearances.

5 Things Not To Miss at #TGE2017

We’re back with another 5 Things You Cannot Miss At #TGE2017. Our curated list is below, but first… friendly reminder that The Gentlemen’s Expo is November 24 & 25 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, North Building. Style & Grooming, Food & Drink, Health & Wellness, Guest Speakers and Live Demos. Don’t ya dare miss it! Now, on to the list…

Whitley Neill

Yes, we are getting quite a reputation for having an incredible selection on cocktails at our event. Yes, we are ‘OK’ with this. Yes, we will be showcasing a number of bevvys this year; like Whitley Neill Gin. Inspired by Africa and handcrafted in England. It’s a balanced Dry Gin; that blends classic gin botanicals with exotic African essences to create a blend with a flavour as unique as its heritage. Make sure you look out for Whitley Neill from Nov 24-25 at the MTCC North Building.

Gentlemen Of The North

GOTN is what happens when two stylish gents want to create a line of cool clothing and top notch accessories. We can’t wait to check out their latest line of Headwear at TGE2017. It’s made for Canadian winters by people who have actually experienced Canadian winters. Oh, and also ask them about the Gentlemen Of The North ‘sock of the month’ club. You’ll be glad you did.

Track & Field / Bangarang

Track & Field Bar is one of our favourite places. We love the bocce. We love the shuffleboard. We love their staff. Sonaturally, we totally freaked out when we heard they have opened a new bar, ‘Bangarang’, on College St.  We asked them (ok, so we begged them) to come to our show. They agreed. They will be at #TGE2017… and they will be bringing the games. Expect shuffleboard and cornhole… and good times.

6ix Man Grooming

We know that taking care of your beard is no joke. This is serious business. 6ix Man is a start-up in the field of cosmeticsfocusing on mens grooming. They define a 6ix Man as “A classically modern man. Regardless of what he is doing, he always looks good.” Does that sound like you? I bet it does. Beard oils, balms, combs and everything you need to keep your beard fresh. That’s 6ix Man.

Shirt Studs

What can we say about Shirt Studs… Theses trailblazers are always pushing the boundaries of what’s next in men’s style accessories. Mixed media, 3D printing and beyond. May we suggest cuff links that project holograms of our favourite hip hop acts performing? AT #TGE2017 take a look at their offerings. You’ll be amazed. Even better, everything Shirt Studs makes is hand crafted in Toronto. And yes, those are Prestige Worldwide cufflinks. Siiiiick!

There’s another quick rundown of some our most anticipated partners at #TGE2017.
